The second week-end of the D&G under 11 league meant a double-header for the Galloway team. Both matches were at the delightful Gatehouse ground but, unfortunately for the young Galloway boys, resulted in 2 defeats.
On the Friday Arran Seymour with a powerful 72 and Andrew Murray were the chief run-getters in a total of 128 and Andrew in partnership with Fraser Strachan was responsible for restricting the top-order and ensuring victory for the Coatbridge Coldstore team.
In Sunday’s game the visitors were the Annandale Insurance side who prevailed by 13 runs in close match. Captain for the day, Finlay Cairns, was top scorer for the Dumfries team with 37 and was well supported by Rachel Howard (19). In reply, Chris Berry added a score of 9, to go with his 6 not out in Friday’s match.
In the final week-end it was Coatbridge Coldstore’s turn for a double-header. Friday evening was the big match and they had to beat their Nunholm colleagues to share the title. They batted first and the in-form Seymour, Rory Dunlop and Owen Thompson were all impressive with the bat, scoring double figures in fine total of 95 for 2.
Owen then opened the bowling and his 4 for 14 pinned the Annandale Insurance team firmly on the ropes. However, this only brought Douglas Hubbert (18 runs) to the crease and ultimately they cruised to a 3 wicket victory with an incredible 6 overs to spare! Niall Alexander with a well-crafted 25 not out was responsible for the sudden end to the match and Coatbridge’s title aspirations.
On the Sunday, holdidays affected the match between Galloway and Coatbridge Coldstore but this should not detract from Owen Thompson’s top score of 39 not out or Aaron Stewart’s impressive 1 for 0 from his 3 overs.
Year 1 of the D&G league was a little disappointing but produced convincing winners in Annandale Insurance. Hopefully there will be more competition for them next season.
